Littlehampton Twinning Association

A busy weekend

Members of the Association had a very busy weekend. On Friday evening many members, friends and members of the public attended a musical extravaganza at the Littlehampton Academy. The much acclaimed Littlehampton Steel Band wowed the audience with a sample of their music  which included the James bond theme 'Live and Let die'. They were followed by the Rock Group 'Replay' which played many well known Rock pieces spanning the years from the 60's up to the present day.

On Sunday the annual Cheese and wine at James and Malcolm's house once again brought out the sun.  Members of the Association basked in the sun and admired their beautiful garden while sampling cheese from all over the world, as well as a few glasses of wine of course.

A Great Twinning Weekend

The sun had come out and our French friends from Chennevieres sur Marne had arrived, greeted by the Mayor, Councillor Joyce Bowyer, at a small reception in the Manor House on Friday, April 1st. The first visit of the year for the Littlehampton Twinning Association had started.

After an evening with their host families, our 31 French friends and 25 of their English hosts met at Littlehampton station and headed for Portsmouth and the historic dockyard. The weather was kind for our tour of the harbour by boat, followed, energy permitting, by visits to two museums, HMS Warrior and HMS Victory and a little shopping. Everyone met at the allotted time for the return journey and despite a change of trains on the way home; we arrived back at Littlehampton with our full compliment of 56. On arrival, we had the bonus of our French friends saying how impressed they were with Southern Railways.

After a short rest, there then followed a traditional English evening with skittles at the Scout Hall in Lineside Way and a fish and chip supper. Much appreciated by all, even if we did not have time to enjoy a few songs and a little dancing to a genuine French accordion.

It was strange to walk along the east bank of the river on Sunday morning and hear so much French being spoken. It was a privilege also to be able to show off to our French friends the east bank of the river on a sunny April Sunday morning, the cafes, the bench and the other attractions of Littlehampton.

A surprise for neighbours of the Manor car park at midday on Sunday, to hear the strains of Auld Lang Syne and Sussex by the Sea as our French friends departed after an all too short but really enjoyable stay. The Associations sincere thanks to all who helped organise the weekend and especially those hosting our French visitors.

Skittles - March 2010

Nearly 50 members and friends enjoyed a fun evening at the 5th Littlehampton Scout Hall where they all took part in a very successful Skittles evening and raised a total of £280. £50 of this will be donated to Sports Relief and the remainder will be going towards helping to fund the German's trip to Littlehampton in July.

The ladies had a very keen competition with Marie Denise Wallace beating 4 other other contenders with a one-ball knock out to clinch the Ladies' trophy. Chris Allen was a clear winner for the Men's trophy.

The 2 Davids' visit to Karlsruhe

David Twinn and David Dyball went to Durmersheim as planned for the Karlsruhe Exhibition.  The exhibition consisted of 4 large halls plus a stage - equivalent to The Ideal Homes Exhibition.  Total number of visitors was reported as 130,000.

As reported by David Twinn – ‘we were in an area of 300 sq m funded by Rastatt District Council  where towns in the district were given areas to display what they had to offer and invite their twinning partners to join them.  The theme being Tourism and Leisure with Twinning. From Tuesday until Sunday David and I attended from 10am – 6pm.  We did take time off Thursday afternoon to visit Durmersheim and visited Veronique Blay in her wine shop and the Third World Charity Shop.’

This visit was funded personally and with a donation from Durmersheim Town Hall.
